Committee to tackle prison overcrowding

The Council of Ministers has set up a committee to submit proposals on how to resolve the problem of overcrowding in Nicosia Central Prison.

Presidential pardons and legislative amendments to expand open prison, vocational training and monitoring from home with ankle bracelets help ease the problem but do not resolved it, an official statement said.

The committee will discuss the issue in depth and make suggestions within six months.

It is chaired by the permanent secretary of the justice ministry and is made up of prison management, the head of the parole board and an academic who represents Cyprus on European Committee on the prevention of degrading treatment or punishment.
