The Commissioner’s Office for Gender Equality has requested a “full and direct” briefing from the office of European Structural and Investment Funds in Cyprus on the issue of whether it funded a portable men’s urinal in the shape of a female body.
In an announcement, the Commissioner’s Office for Gender Equality said that the product is insulting to women, reproduces gender stereotypes and prejudices at a time when the state is spending money to fight them and promote equality.
“It is unimaginable that this product which is humiliating for women is advertised as innovative. We will wait for an official briefing from the responsible authority,” the announcement says.
The product – which is available in Cypriot markets – was advertised on the company’s page with logos of the EU and the Republic of Cyprus and has been slammed as vulgar and sexist commercialisation of women by POGO, the women’s wing of AKEL.
