Cloudy, with showers, strong winds and dust on weather forecast

Unsettled weather is forecast for the next few days with rain, snow in the mountains, strong winds and even dust tonight and tomorrow.

In its early morning weather bulletin, the Met Office said a low pressure system centered on the north Aegean is moving slowly east, affecting the weather in the area.

Wednesday will be partly cloudy, with isolated showers and the possibility of snow or sleet in the higher Troodos peaks. Winds will be medium to strong, becoming very strong in the afternoon and temperatures will rise to 18 C inland and on the coasts and around 8 C in the higher mountains.

Tonight will be partly cloudy and at intervals cloudy, with local showers while later isolated thunderstorms are forecast, especially in the west and north.

Sleet is possible in the higher Troodos peaks and there will also be dust in the atmosphere.

Temperatures will fall to 12 C inland, around 16 C on the coasts and around 5 C in the mountains. Locally there may be frost in the higher Troodos peaks.

Thursday will be cloudy at intervals with local showers in most areas and scattered thunderstorms. Snowfall is forecast in the higher Troodos peaks. There will be dust in the atmosphere which from midday on will disperse. Early in the morning there will be very strong southerly to southwesterly winds.

Friday will be at intervals cloudy with local rain and/or isolated thunderstorms. There will be snowfall at intervals in the higher mountains while in the lower mountains there may be snowfall locally at lower altitudes.

On Thursday evening and on Friday, the thunderstorms may be accompanied by hail.

On Saturday there will be intervals of mainly fine weather and intervals of cloud and there will be isolated rain and snowfall in the mountains, however the weather will improve by the afternoon.

Temperatures will remain at the same levels on Thursday at a little above the seasonal average, edging down on Friday to below average. A further small drop in temperatures is expected on Saturday.

The depth of snow in Troodos Square at the time of issue of the early morning weather bulletin was 60 cm.
