Following yesterday’s meeting under President Anastasiades, big cheese-makers producing more than 70% of halloumi exports agreed to adjust to the new facts, after the verdict of the Legal Service and to start the production a PDO (Protected Designation Origin) product.
The cheese-makers agreed: a) to implement the legislation on PDO, b) to register to the PDO mechanism, c) to receive all milk produced by sheep and goat farmers, d) to increase the prices paid for sheep and goat milk, and e) to withdraw lawsuits.
On its part the government agreed to give them two months so that any products with the name halloumi will be distributed. The government is also providing financial support to sheep and goat farmers.
