Cans For Kids, a Cypriot charity that has been active since 1990, on Monday handed over five vital signs monitors worth over €6,000 to the Minister of Health and representatives of Okypy.

A diaphanoscope which was needed urgently by Paphos hospital was delivered earlier this month, bringing the total value of equipment donated by Cans For Kids this month to more than €7,000.

The monitors will be placed at Makarios Hospital and the Thalassemia Centre in Nicosia, and in the paediatric wards at hospitals in Larnaca, Famagusta and Polis.

Accepting the donation, the Minister of Health, Constantinos Ioannou, thanked the charity for its long-standing support for public hospitals, which is reflected in the nearly €300,000 spent in 30 years by the organisation on equipment for Makareio Hospital.

“Both today’s donation and previous donations show how private initiative strengthens efforts by the State to ensure that patients receive the treatment they need.

“The five monitors donated today to Okypy hospitals will be used to the fullest for the benefit of our children and fellow citizens,” Ioannou concluded.

Handing over the machines, Cans For Kids President Rosie Charalambous explained that, having donated equipment worth more than a quarter of a million euros to the children’s wards at Makarios Hospital over the last 30 years, Cans For Kids was now expanding its assistance to help the paediatric wards in other hospitals across the island.

“We couldn’t do this without the invaluable help of our dedicated volunteers who give up their Saturday mornings to sort the cans we collect from all over Cyprus,” she said, and pledged to continue the charity’s drive to keep our environment clean and, in doing so, to improve the quality of care available to children in Cypriot hospitals.

“It’s a win-win situation, so please make sure you recycle your cans with Cans for Kids,” Charalambous concluded.
