Diko party want leader Papadopoulos to be 2023 presidential election runner

Diko leader Nicolas Papadopoulos is officially the centre party’s candidate for the 2023 presidential elections but discussions for possible alliances with other opposition political forces do not exclude other possible runners.

The leadership of the third-largest party which held its Pancyprian congress on Sunday seems to have taken this decision so as to keep open the dialogue with main opposition Akel.

Akel has ruled out discussing any party leader’s name as a possible election candidate if alliances are to be forged.

Diko has sent out the message that they are ready to turn to other political forces that agree with them except far-right Elam.

Their leader also said Diko will be the ruling party or a main part of a coalition government in order to bring about change after the 2023 elections.

However, the burden for a counter-proposal on a possible runner is transferred to the other parties and always on the condition that any alternative choice must be strongly justified.

Insiders told Philenews the scenario of Diko backing the possible candidacy of former health minister Giorgos Pamborides is out of the question even though Akel seems to have him as one of their options.

But the possibility of Diko supporting the independent candidacy of former foreign minister Nikos Christodoulides seems to be negotiable. Akel, in this case, has flatly rejected such a scenario.
