Candidacies for May 30 parliamentary elections submitted on Wednesday

Candidacies for the Mediterranean island’s May 30 parliamentary elections are submitted on Wednesday, from 9:30 to 12:30 in the morning, with the number of hopefuls reaching a record high.

Specifically, as many as 650 hopefuls were running up until Tuesday but this number could rise further with last minute candidacies on Wednesday.

The overall number of parliamentary seats is 56 and elections in Cyprus are held every five years. In 2016, the total number of candidacies had not even reached 500.

Undoubtedly, the cost of the elections this year will also reach a record high with the inclusion of mobile ballot boxes for the first time ever because of the coronavirus.  The overall cost is estimated at around €3.6 million.

The final number of mobile ballot boxes will be clarified on Friday.

Preliminary data shows an overall of 15 combinations of candidates running for the districts of Nicosia, Limassol, Famagusta and Kyrenia.

In addition, 12 combinations are running for Larnaca seats and 13 for Paphos ones.

Moreover, three independent candidates are running in the district of Nicosia, two in Limassol district and one in Famagusta district.
