Call for tenders for traffic cameras by end of year

Relevant News

A call for tenders for traffic cameras will be carried out before the end of the year, a project which will cost more than 40 million euros and highly needed in order to reduce road accidents.

Tender specifications are ready, stated the Director of the Department of Electromechanical Services Markos Markou, adding that they have now been sent to relevant authorities for approval. Specifically, they have been sent to the Treasury, the Audit Office and the Police. Once the specifications have been approved and before the end of the year or even earlier if everything goes well, the call will be published.

The new item in the call has to do with the management and maintenance of the equipment, which, unlike previous calls, will be carried out by a private entity and under the supervision of the Police and the Electromechanical Services.

According to the information, the project is expected to cost over 40 million euros, which will be taken over by the tender and paid by the state. The 110 traffic cameras will be put in place during the course of three phases and 20 of them will be mobile; they will be used by Traffic Police on motorways and roads. The previous attempt to install traffic cameras was 12 years ago but in 2007 the contract was terminated, resulting in the government and the supplier being brought before the court.

Since then, other attempts have been made to launch new tender calls without success. Now that the system’s model of operation has been clarified, calls are going ahead, especially seen as the problem with sustainability studies has been overcome.

As estimated, the cameras will significantly reduce road accidents because drivers will be forced to be more cautious.
