Cabinet approves proposal for three new ministry buildings

Relevant News

Cabinet on Wednesday gave the green light for the construction of a complex of three buildings in the heart of Nicosia to house the Ministry of Interior as well as two other ministries.

This is what Interior Minister Nicos Nouris told journalists after a Cabinet meeting, adding that the proposed location for the ambitious project is the area just in front of where the Interior Ministry is today.

“There is a big area of 6,500 square metres in front of the building where the Interior Ministry is today and this has been allocated to the Interior Ministry,” he said.

“We have tabled a detailed proposal, based on all provisions of the law, for the erection of a complex of three buildings to house not only the Interior Ministry but also two other ministries,” he added.

Describing the decision by the Cabinet as historic, Nouris also said that the three new buildings will create an axis of  activity starting from the Presidential Palace and the Foreign Ministry which is across it on Severis Avenue.

Severis Avenue leads to where the Ministry of Interior and two other government buildings are today – that of the Ministry of Finance and the Auditor General’s Office.

“I think it is a very important decision, we will proceed according to the instructions of the Cabinet and the first step is the announcement of a competition,” Nouris also said.

Two large underground parking spaces of 450 spots are part of the planned development.
