Brighter today, but below average temperatures continue

Tuesday will start off partly cloudy but will clear during the morning. However temperatures remain below average while police are warning drivers in the mountains and semi-mountainous areas to be particularly careful because of ice.

According to the Met Office’s early morning weather bulletin, weak low pressure is affecting the area. Tuesday will start off partly cloudy with the possibility of isolated rain, mainly in the south and east and light snowfall locally in the mountains early in the morning, but will soon clear.

Temperatures will rise to 12 C inland, around 13 C on the coasts and around 0 C in the higher mountains. Ice is expected in the higher mountains while early in the morning there will also be frost locally at lower altitudes.

Tonight will be mainly fine. Temperatures will fall to 6 C inland, around 8 C on the coasts and around -4 in the higher mountains. There will be frost in the mountains and locally in semi-mountainous areas.

Wednesday will be mainly fine even though locally there will be intervals of increased cloud. Thursday will be mainly fine initially but clouds will form later which may lead to isolated, mainly light showers and in the higher mountains, snowfall. Friday will see intervals of sunshine and intervals of increased cloud.

Temperatures will remain at the same levels on Wednesday, edging up on Thursday to close to but still slightly below the seasonal average. They are expected to drop again on Friday to below average.

The depth of snow at Troodos Square at the time of the issue of the bulletin was 82 cm.

Roads

There is ice on the roads in the mountains and drivers are urged to be particularly careful.

All roads to Troodos are open only to cars with four wheel drive or those equipped with snow chains.

The same restrictions currently apply to the following roads:

  • Palechori-Agros-Alona
  • Palechori-Askas- Fterikoudi-Alona
  • Alona-Platanistasa
  • Alona-Polistypos
  • Polistypos-Lagoudera
  • Lagoudera-Chandria

Schools

Because of problems with the roads the Education Ministry has announced that the following schools are closed: Agros, Lemythou and Omodhos secondary schools and Kyperounta and Pano Platres primary schools.
