A bill that will pave the way for the operation of private shooting ranges has been sidelined, Phileleftheros reported on Tuesday.
It said that the Parliament decided to postpone voting on the law, as there was no consensus among government services.
According to information, the government is considering removing the provision that will legalise the operation of private shooting ranges, from the bill.
This has reportedly made foreign investors unhappy, who believe that Cyprus is an ideal location for open-air shooting ranges due to its weather conditions.
After the news broke, Russian millionaire and president of Parklane Hotels Roman Nikitin, issued an announcement saying that “in the case that the law is approved I would be possibly interested in investing in the sector.”
He said that he is considering the creation of a sports complex in Limassol with open-air and indoor shooting ranges which can host international competitions.
“We will give more details after the bill is approved by the Parliament,” he said.
Sources told Phileleftheros that business people from the occupied north have approached to show them an open-air shooting range that is operating in Kionelli.
The bill provides regulations for 11 types of shooting ranges, both closed and open-air for many kinds of guns except automatic rifles and air guns. It also provides for ranges for archery.
