Ban on Swordfish catch from January 1 to March 31, 2022

A ban on Swordfish catch in the Mediterranean is in place from January 1 to March 31 next year, according to an announcement by the Cyprus Department of Fisheries and Marine Research.

Swordfish has been overfished in the last 30 years and the Mediterranean will be facing a potential total collapse of the stock, added Tuesday’s announcement.

The ban is in line with latest action taken by the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas latest regulations.

During the closed period of Swordfish fishing, neither targeted nor by-catch fishing, trade or transshipment of this sort of catch is allowed.

Therefore, all fishing activities, as well as trade of Swordfish catches must be completed no later than this Friday, December 31, at 24:00.

Any violation spotted during the closed period of January 1, 2022 to March 31, 2022 should be reported at the island-wide contact number of 99 834357.
