Sitting at single desks just before starting their morning physical exercise and the rest of the day’s classes seniors at ‘Embrace’ Day Care Center in Liopetri do their best to slow down dementia. If not avoid it all together.

Philenews recently paid a visit to this special example-to-be-followed ‘school’ where ‘students’ seem to enjoy every moment.

The strengthening the mind programs were put together by professionals and the goal is to remain functional or, if they already have dementia, to delay extreme symptoms as much as possible.

Seniors express themselves through music, dance, art, games and physical exercise which takes place at sea during the summer months. And to those seniors facing financial difficulties these programs are offered free of charge.

Moreover, staff members even help them in their shopping from supermarkets if they live alone. And, of course, the program provides enough excursions as well. The oldest of the students is 98 years old.

Christos Kkolos, who is 85 and from Liopetri, Famagusta district, lost his wife 10 months ago.

His children did not want him to stay at home alone and succumb to melancholy so they convinced him to visit the Center.

Ever since, he has been going there on a daily basis. “I’m really happy that I can come here every day. We have a good time, we are good here, I wish more people our age get this  chance,” he said.
