Baby born to positive mother tests negative to Covid-19

Relevant News

A baby boy born on Tuesday at Makario Hospital in Nicosia to a mother found positive to Covid-19 has tested negative to the virus, head of the Paediatric Clinic at the hospital Avraam Elia told CNA.

Elia said that the baby is in perfect health and does not present any symptoms, adding that the newborn will remain at the hospital and in seven days he will re-take the Coronavirus test.

“If the second test also comes out negative, then the baby will be discharged and be reunited with the mother, given that she will also get two successive negative results,” Elia explained.

One sample taken from the mother has already come out negative, he said, and that she will take the second test on Saturday

This is the first child born in Cyprus to a coronavirus-positive mother, the doctor noted.

Asked whether children have been found positive to the virus, Elia said that the only case of a child that required hospitalisation was that of a three-month old baby who had been found positive, was treated at Makario Hospital for three days and has since been discharged and is monitored remotely every day.

He said that currently five children are being treated in a specially modified ward at Makario Hospital, two of whom have tested negative to the virus and the results for the other three are expected today.
