Thursday’s fire north of Ayios Athanasios in Limassol started near the road and investigations are underway to determine how, officials said.
The Ayios Athanasios fire started around around 3.30 pm in difficult terrain and was fanned by strong winds burning wild vegetation and dry grass.
Eight fire engines and four fire fighting aircraft were able to contain the fire by 5.30 pm after excavators managed to create buffer zones to stop the fire from spreading.
“The fire started on the limits of the road and 150 metres from the German Oncology Centre in Ayios Athanasios, ” the fire service said. It burned a total of five hectares.
Because of the direction of the wind the fire did not endanger the centre or any other building.
Police and the fire services are investigating the cause of the fire.
