Ayia Napa CCTV cameras to be operational by spring

Relevant News

Ayia Napa Mayor Yiannis Karousos is optimistic that the new CCTV system in central areas of Ayia Napa will be in full operation by spring.

Following the green light given by cabinet last week, work is already underway to prepare the tenders for the €200,000 CCTV system which aims to improve a sense of security in the tourist resort.

Karousos told Phileleftheros that even though all recorded footage will be stored in a special room at the town hall, only the police will have legal access to it to use to tackle crime or protect property and the public.

Access to the room will require a series of passwords. Each individual with access will know only one of the passwords so as to ensure that the footage is not accessed by individuals without securing permission.

Footage that has no information of use to police will be deleted at regular intervals, he added.

Karousos said that a number of towns abroad have CCTV. Such systems boost a sense of security among residents and visitors and help combat petty crime such as destruction of municipal property such as rubbish bins, trees, signs and flowerbeds.
