The Larnaca Criminal Investigation Department (CID) is focusing on the Asprokremmos dam in Paphos district in search for weapons used in the Ayia Napa attempted murder on February 16 as well as other crimes, philenews reports.
The search that started yesterday and continues today is conducted with the help of the fire service’s disaster response unit (Emak) and divers.
The police were pointed to the location by a 38-year-old man initially remanded in custody for the Ayia Napa case but who later admitted his involvement in the attempt on the life of Charalambos Charalambous, aka Mavros, in Larnaca last November.
The 38-year-old has confessed his involvement in both crimes after his DNA was found on the weapon used in the Ayia Napa attempt, a Kalashnikov, recovered from a car park near the scene.
The man’s confession that he committed the Larnaca attempt has been confirmed by CCTV footage and is further supported by his sharing of important details that only the perpetrator could have known.
A convict currently serving a life sentence is also under arrest on suspicion of being the instigator of the Ayia Napa attempt. He too was arrested and remanded in custody for eight days for the attempt on the life of Charalambous.
The 38-year-old implicated the convict in both the Larnaca and Ayia Napa incidents after he told police that he ordered the hits from inside the prison. The convict has denied any involvement in either case.
The 38-year-old was reportedly using a British phone number to communicate with the convict in prison, which is expected to be verified by the telephone records to be obtained by the police that are expected to show whether the 38-year-old received calls from a mobile phone in the Central Prison area.
Meanwhile, it has been revealed that authorities believe that the convict is not the instigator of the two attempts. They also said that the instigator may not become known unless new testimonies emerge.
The intended victim of the Ayia Napa attack was a businessman who left a bar about 20 minutes before a lone gunman opened fire, injuring four people who were inside.
Last November, Charalambous sustained serious injuries from gunfire after he was ambushed in the area of Larnaca port.
