As of Wednesday, wearing a protective helmet is mandatory for cyclists and police warned that they will start fining people caught contravening the law.
Cyclists caught not wearing a helmet on the road will risk fines of up to €500, Philenews also reports.
Moreover, the protective helmets will have to comply with current EU CYS1078 specification which relates to shock absorption and allows for ample vision. As well as present safe fastening devices and a dedicated label.
Last year, four cyclists and one e-scooter driver lost their lives. None of them was wearing a helmet, traffic police said.
Police insiders also said that – at least for a short while – when a cyclist is sported not wearing a helmet he/she will only be advised to do so.
They will be reminded that this saves lives and prevent a head injury if and when a cyclist falls off the bicycle.
