Applications open for bicycle subsidy scheme

Applications for the government’s bicycle subsidy scheme are now open, the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works announced on Tuesday.

The applications can be submitted electronically at www.podilato.gov.cy until 21 September, 22:00.

According to a Cabinet decision, people who meet the following socioeconomic criteria can apply for the scheme:

  • Recipients of the minimum guaranteed income
  • Recipients of welfare assistance
  • Recipient of benefits for pensioners with low income
  • Families with one dependent child who receive child benefits and have an annual gross income of up to €19,500
  • Families with two dependent children who receive child benefits and have an annual gross income of up to €39,000
  • Families with three or more dependent children who receive child benefits and have an annual gross income of up to €49,000

Persons with disabilities must include a European Disability Card with their application or present a certificate from the evaluation committee of the department of social inclusion of people with disabilities.

Applicants for the purchase of city, road and mountain bikes will receive up to €200 (VAT included), provided that the total cost of the bicycle does not exceed €1,000 (VAT included), or the total purchase price of the bicycle (if the cost is lower than €200).

Applicants for the purchase of bicycles for people with disabilities will receive up to €800 (VAT included), provided that the total cost of the bicycle does not exceed €4,000 (VAT included), or the total purchase price of the bicycle (if the cost is lower than €800).

Cypriot nationals, citizens of EU member states and third-country nationals, aged 18 and over, permanently residing in areas controlled by the Republic of Cyprus are eligible to apply.

Applicants who benefited from the scheme in 2021 will not be able to apply.

The Ministry said that the total budget for the scheme is €200,000 for 2022.

The target is to subsidise the purchases of 900 non-electric bicycles, as well as 25 bicycles for persons with disabilities.
