Paphos and Geroskipou authorities cleared about 400 trucks of seaweed washed up on their beaches last year, Geroskipou mayor Michalis Pavlides told the Cyprus News Agency.

He said that 170 of the 400 trucks were operated by Geroskipou Municipality and hoteliers. Pavlides said hoteliers have already started clearing Geroskipou beaches this year and the municipality will start its efforts in April.

Paphos municipality’s beach inspector Papmbos Charalambous said the local authority will start clearing beaches of seaweed and  detritus in late March-early April, in preparation for the summer.

He said the seaweed was not considered refuse and that the sea off those beaches were clean.

The president of the Paphos branch of the Cyprus Hoteliers Association Thanos Michaelides said the problem was particularly acute in winter when a lot of seaweed is washed up.
