4 candidates to contest election for UCY rector

Four professors have thrown their hat into the ring for the elections which will select University of Cyprus’ next rector.

One of Efstathios Paparoditis, Panos Razis, Tasos Christofides and Antonis Kakkas will replace rector Constantinos Christofides after the end of his term on December 16, 2018.

The elections will take place on October 3.

Efstathios Paparoditis:

Professor of Mathematics and Statistics at UCY.

Undergraduate and graduate studies at Freie Universitat Berlin (MA 1985, PhD 1990).

He has taught at Technische Universitaet Berlin, Federal Republic of Germany (1990-1993) and University of Cyprus (1993-).

He is associate editor of the journals Metrika, Journal of Statistical Planning and Inference, Journal of Nonparametric Studies and Journal of Time Series Econometrics.

Panos Razis:

Professor of Physics at UCY.

He holds a BSc degree in Physics from the National Kapodistrian University of Athens (1980) and a Master of Science (1982), Master of Philosophy (1982) and Ph.D. (1986) degrees in Physics from Yale University, USA.

He worked at Yale University, at the National Polytechnic School of Zurich (ETH-Zurich) and at the European Laboratory for Particle Physics (CERN), where since 1986 he is conducting his experiments in High Energy Physics.

He is one of the leading members of the CMS Experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) that discovered the Higgs boson, which led to the award of the Nobel Prize in Physics (2013).

During the course of the Cyprus accession at CERN he was appointed as President of the Cyprus-CERN Committee. He currently serves as Scientific Delegate of Cyprus at CERN and appointed member in the European Committee for Future Accelerators (ECFA), which shapes the European strategy on accelerators, particle physics and other related fields with major impact for science and society.

Since 1992 he leads the Cyprus High-Energy Physics Group at CERN.

Antonis Kakkas:

Professor of Computer Science at UCY.

Undergraduate studies at Imperial College, University of London, UK (B.Sc. in Mathematics, 1980). Graduate studies at Imperial College, University of London, UK (M.Sc. in Computer Science, 1987 and Ph.D. in Theoretical Physics, 1984).

He has worked as Research Fellow at Kings College, UK (1984-1986), at the University of Zurich, Switzerland (1987-1988), and at Imperial College, UK (1988-1992).

He is a member of the editorial board of the journals AI Communications, Journal of Applied Logic and Journal of Theory and Applications of Logic Programming.

Tasos Christofides:

Professor of Mathematics at UCY.

Undergraduate studies in Maths at University of Athens (1983). Graduate studies at John Hopkins University, USA (MSE 1985, PhD, 1987).

Has taught at Binghamton University, New York (1987-1991) and UCY (1991-).

He is associate editor of the the journals Communications in Statistics – Theory and Methods, Communication in Statistics – Computation and Simulation, Journal of Statistic Theory and Practice, Statistics and Probability Letters.
