Work to extend Protaras’ coastal promenade will begin in November at a cost of €4.5 million, Paralimni  Mayor Theodoros Pyrillis told the Cyprus News Agency.

He said that bids have been invited with the aim of extending the promenade from Fig Tree Bay to Bali tou Hadjixeni on the one side and from Pernera Beach to Ayios Nicolaos Chapel on the other, covering a total distance of 3.5 kilometres.

Bids must be in by September 27 and construction work is expected to begin in the first week of November and take five months.

Pyrillis said the aim is to create additional recreational facilities along the coastal front. He added that the coastal promenade offered visitors the opportunity to enjoy a walk or jog along the sea.

It also offers access to pleasure craft,  restaurants, beaches and children’s play areas. The promenade has small ‘squares’  with benches and pavilions so that visitors can rest.

“Particularly during the summer Protaras’ coastal promenade is attracts a lot of people, both foreigners and locals while a number of cultural and recreational events are held there,” the mayor added.
