Another 29 people tested positive for coronavirus the Health Ministry said on Tuesday, up on yesterday’s levels (19).
This brings the total number of confirmed cases to 494 (including ten in the British Bases).
The 29 cases were found after 1353 tests
Dr Leontios Kostrikis said today’s results were in line with estimates.
“The epidemiological picture we have in the last few days allows us to look at the future with optimism, but we want to make clear that nothing has been decided and we do not have the luxury to make mistakes,” he added as he reiterated the call for everyone to stay home.
Dr Marios Loizou also spoke of the positive image of relative stabilisation of the number of cases.
But he warned that we are dealing with a virus to which we have no immunity which leads to illness for which there is no treatment.
According to the update from the Ministry of Health, the new confirmed cases are:
- 22 found through tracing of the contacts of people who were found positive to Coronavirus
- 3 in Paphos
- 4 whose history is being investigated
Of the 10 cases which were being investigated in previous days, nine have been traced to contacts and one is a person who was in self-isolation after returning from a trip.
The 494 cases were detected after a total of 13,017 tests.
Of the 494 cases, 364 come from contacts, that is the contagion occurred in Cyprus.
A total of 47 people have been discharged from hospital.
At 3 pm today, there were 31 Covid-19 patients at Famagusta Hospital which is the referral hospital for coronavirus, three of them in the special care unit.
Two patients were discharged today.
A total of 13 are intubated, two in the ICU of Limassol Hospital and 11 at the ICU of Nicosia Hospital.
Their condition is described as steady, but critical.
Another seven confirmed cases are in wards and their condition is described as good.
“The days ahead we may see at our hospitals the initial incomplete compliance with the measures. This illness has one steady element — the rate of those in serious condition with the number of patients. Already the number of patients intubated in intensive care is increasing. Today the situation is manageable, but we must comply with the measures,” said Marios Loizou.
Dr Leontios Kostrikis gave a breakdown of the number of tests and positive cases since April 1 as follows:
April 1, 779 tests, 58 positive cases, which is the largest so far
April 2, 603 tests, 36 positive cases
April 3, 668 tests, 40 positive cases
April 4, 698 tests, 30 positive cases
April 5, 792 tests, 20 positive cases
April 6, 718 tests, 19 positive cases
“In the light of the above, today’s 29 cases after 1,353 tests are in line with our estimates that the road is the right one, but it is long,” he said.
He highlighted the importance of tracing and the effectiveness of the restrictive measures but said that these current days are critical in deciding what happens next.
