Relevant News

A 24 year old youth has been jailed for seven months for a series of traffic offences including drunk driving.

In a separate announcement, police said they had arrested an 18 year old youth who failed to comply with a police officer’s signal to stop and was later found to be driving without insurance.

On Thursday, Famagusta district court jailed the 24 year old man, resident of the free Famagusta area, for seven months after finding him guilty of serious traffic offences committed on August 4, 2019 and February 27, 2020 in Ayia Napa.

Police said the youth was found to be driving with 181 mg% alcohol in his blood — 20 times the legal limit of 9 mg%.

He was also driving recklessly, speeding, was in the opposite lane of the direction of traffic and failed to comply with a police officer’s signal to stop.

In the second instance, police said that at around 10.20 pm on Thursday, police officers on the Aradippou-Athienou road signalled to a driver who was doing 105 km per hour in a 80 km per hour zone to stop.

But instead he drove off, driving in a reckless and dangerous way.

He was cut off by police and found to be driving with a learner’s licence without being accompanied by an experienced driver and without insurance. Moreover, the car’s front right headlight was not working.

He was arrested and later released to appear in court. The 58 year old owner of the vehicle was also summoned to the police station and charged with failing to take the necessary measures for the safe keeping of his car.
