Cyprus had the fourth highest share of people in the EU who could not afford to keep their home adequately warm in 2017 with 23%, though the situation has improved compared to a 31% high in 2012 and 2013.
According to figures for 2017 published by Eurostat, 8% of the EU population said in an EU-wide survey that they could not afford to heat their home sufficiently. This share peaked in 2012 (11%), and has fallen continuously in subsequent years, Eurostat said.
The situation in the EU Member States varies. The largest share of people who said that they could not afford to keep their home adequately warm was recorded in Bulgaria (37%), followed by Lithuania (29%), Greece (26%), Cyprus (23%) and Portugal (20%).
In contrast, the lowest shares (close to 2%) were recorded in Luxembourg, Finland, Sweden, the Netherlands and Austria.
The number of people in Cyprus who said they could not afford to heat their house sufficiently edged down from 24% in 2016 to 23% in 2017.
Figures for the past 10 years show a peak of 31% in 2012 and 2013, the height of the financial crisis.
