A 22-year old was jailed for six months for the road death of a 49 year old father of three in Deftera in December 2016
The decision was taken by the Nicosia District Court on Tuesday which also suspended his driving licence for 18 months and imposed eight penalty points.
The accident occurred when the victim Yiannis Hadjiyiannis got out of his truck to place warning cones on a road where safety barriers were going to be erected.
He was hit by a car driven by the 22 year old. Hadjiyiannis was killed when he was pinned between the car and his truck while the driver was injured.
Arguing in mitigation, defence said the accident was the result of momentary oversight. He said the defendant was not speeding, that he had tried to avoid the victim and suffered from post-traumatic stress.
The judge however disagreed that it was a momentary oversight saying visibility was good and he should have seen the truck.
“He made a serious mistake when driving a car, creating a dangerous situation which led to the death of a man,” the court said.
