21 irregular migrants picked up in Nicosia’s Sopaz area

Police have picked up 21 irregular migrants in the Sopaz area in Nicosia, the Cyprus News Agency reports.

It said that they were found at around 4 am and are believed to have entered the government controlled areas from the Turkish occupied north.

Police spokesman Christos Andreou told CyBC radio on  Thursday morning that a total of 21 people were picked up, mostly of African origin.

He said that among them was one pregnant woman who has been taken to hospital as a precaution and one minor.

Authorities have been alerted and the group is being transferred to the temporary reception centre at Kokkinotrimithia, he added.

Asked how common it was for police to pick up irregular migrants, he said this had become “practically a daily phenomenon” although the size of the groups vary.

“They come from the Turkish occupied north and ask for asylum from the authorities of the Republic of Cyprus,” he said.
