The Auditor General has described as scandalous the procedure behind the purchase of Metropolitan building in Nicosia which is to house the Ministry of Labour and the social insurance services.
He also raised a red flag over the purchase of a second building in Nicosia to house other government services – specifically that of Nicosia City Central. This is where the dental services, the Registrar of Companies and the deputy ministry for research, innovation and digital policy are scheduled to move into.
Odyseas Michaelides then called on House Finance Committee members looking into the two purchases to withhold releasing the total of €34.4 million of funds for the two buildings – something that they did.
The state official also wondered why the government does not proceed with building new premises to accommodate such needs on state-owned land.
He also reminded that Parliament has the right to withhold government spending when this concerns the buying or leasing of real estate by the state.
