1,702 asylum seekers in October – 85% from Green Line

Relevant News

The Interior Minister’s proposal to the Cabinet for measures at the Green Line to stop the increased migration flows has been postponed for next week.

Minister Nikos Nouris was going to submit a proposal with specific measures but this will probably take place next week so that the proposed measures will be better examined.

According to Phileleftheros, among the measures is the monitoring of specific points of the Green Line with cameras or drones as well as the extension of the barbed wire.

The firm position of Cyprus, which is also the stance of the other Mediterranean countries at the front line is that the Common European System of Asylum and Migration must be balanced regarding the sense of responsibility and solidarity and secure effective management of the migration flows.

An indication of the situation prevailing currently is that fact that only within October 1,702 asylum requests have been filed (85% came from the Green Line) while during the whole of 2021, the requests reached 10,350.
