A steady plume of smoke and ash rose from Mount Etna as the Sicilian volcano erupted on April 1. A Strombolian eruption sent ash 7,000 meters skyward, Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology reported. Footage shared on Instagram by etna3340 shows the plume rising on Thursday.
