Municipal councilors divided regarding demolition of listed buildings

Municipal councilors of the Nicosia Municipality have been divided into two camps regarding the stance vis-à-vis the Archbishop and the fact that he ordered the demolition of listed buildings. Because of the disagreement, the discussion on the issue has been postponed for tomorrow Saturday.

Part of the municipal councilors, mainly the group of AKEL, want strict measures including revocation of the building permit for the Church that the Archbishop is in a hurry to complete.

Also this groups suggests a fine and monitoring of the work to reconstruct the listed buildings.

On the other hand, there is a groups of municipal councilors who want to facilitate the Archbishop to complete the building of the church at the same time with the reconstruction of the listed building. They use the argument that if they take a hard line the municipality might get involed into long judicial procedures. Mayor Giorkatzis is part of this latter group.

The Attorney General informed the municipality that it will investigate the issue and the possible criminal offenses.

According to Phileleftheros information, backstage negotiations took place yesterday so that the hard-line councilors will be convinced to water their wine.
