Update: Mother, father arrested, infant hospitalised as police probe family violence

A 19-month-old infant has been admitted to Makarios Hospital with bruises, abrasions and signs of neglect as Limassol police investigate a suspected case of family violence.

His 24-year-old mother was arrested yesterday and his father was arrested today.

The Cyprus News Agency reports that authorities are investigating a case of exposing a child to danger, assault, causing real bodily harm and violence in the family.

The mother of the child is a foreign national, married to a Greek Cypriot. The family lives in Limassol.

The mother was called to Limassol CID as part of investigations into a different case against her when a social worker saw signs of abuse. Forensic pathologists were called in and found abrasions and bruises on the infant’s body and signs of neglect. It was transferred to Makarios Hospital and admitted for treatment.

The 24-year-old woman had also been arrested last Friday for assaulting her Greek Cypriot mother in law and causing malicious damage to her residence.

Her husband, a 26-year-old Greek Cypriot and father of the child, who was being sought in connection with the same case, was arrested on Tuesday morning.
