MoH: ‘No concern over imported food from China’

The Ministry of Health reassured on Thursday that there is no evidence that food imported from China has been affected by Coronavirus.

According to the announcement by the national competent authorities for food safety — the Public Health Service, the Veterinary Services and the Department of Agriculture — there is no evidence that food imported from China to the EU poses a threat to the health of EU citizens as per the latest scientific updates by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) and the World Health Organisation (WHO).

As regards animal food imports from China, the EU only allows certain products that comply with strict criteria and have been submitted to necessary checks.

For safety reasons, travellers entering the EU customs union are not allowed to carry meat, meat products, milk or dairy products.

EFSA has advised that it currently refrains from any intervention given that there is no evidence that coronavirus can be transmitted through food.

The Ministry of Health assures that the aforementioned competent authorities are in constant communication with scientific authorities to update the public in a timely manner should further updates emerge.
