Misiaouli & Kavazoglou shop owners took to the streets of Limassol on Wednesday morning in protest at the delays in construction work in the area.
Frustrated shop owners marched to Limassol’s Town Hall holding banners saying: “We have become Eleftheria Square” “No more messing around, let us work” “Mayor quit, you have destroyed us” to demand immediate action.
They are angered by the decision of the municipality to issue new tenders to complete work on the road over the next 17 months which they say will lead them to bankruptcy.
Shop owners had been assured that construction would take only 12 months.
President of the action committee Zacharias Athanasiades said that unfortunately the shopkeepers were once again forced to protest outside the town hall.
Athanasiadis said the committee has asked the municipality for the works to be completed within 12 months so as to cover the six to seven months of delay.
But he said the municipality wants to close the road completely so that there is no access to the shops.
Construction companies say the project can be completed in 12 months if there are extra shifts but the the municipality does not want to pay additional sums, he added.
