Transport Minister Yiannis Karousos has promised taxi drivers that heavier penalties are to be introduced to address piracy in their profession.
The minister met a delegation of professional taxi drivers from all the districts to discuss the various problems — chief of which both sides agreed was that of piracy.
Karousis said the ministry would push for changes in the legislation to increase penalties so that they act as a deterrent, along the lines of the steep increase in fines imposed on poachers.
Phileleftheros reports that taxi drivers welcomed the pledge and undertook not to react if perpetrators are found and fined within their ranks. They also said they would follow the advice and initiatives of their associations to improve their image through seminars and training.
