Met office issues new orange alert for rain and thunderstorms

For a second consecutive day, the Met office has issued an orange alert for rain and thunderstorms.

The alert is in force from 12 pm to 6 pm on Saturday.

It said that “heavy thunderstorms associated with hail are expected to affect inland and mountainous areas. Precipitation rate may exceed 55 ml per hour.”

Weather forecast

Rain and storms are expected for the long weekend of Kataklysmos, the Met office said as a low pressure system is affecting Cyprus.

Saturday will start off mainly fine, however increased cloud after noon may lead to isolated showers and/or storms, with a chance of hail mainly inland and in the mountains.

Temperatures will be 33 C inland, 30 C on the south and east coasts, around 28 C on the rest of the coasts and 23 C in the mountains.

On Saturday evening temperatures will drop to 21 C inland, around 22 C on the south and east coasts, around 20 C on the rest of the coasts and 15 C in the mountains.

Sunday, Monday and Tuesday are expected to be about the same, starting off mainly but with an increased chance of rain and/or storms mainly inland and in the mountains.

Temperatures will remain at the same levels, which is about the average for the time of year.
