Met Office issues extreme low temperature warning

The Met Office has issued a yellow alert, warning of extreme low temperatures tonight.

“The minimum temperature is expected to fall to around -9 C over the highest Troodos peaks,” it said.

And it added: “Be aware that low temperatures are expected. Some health risks among vulnerable people e.g. the elderly, very young and homeless are possible.”

The alert is in force from 11 pm on Saturday to 8 am on Sunday.

Earlier today the Met Office said that high pressure and a cold air mass which will recede on Wednesday are affecting the area.

Tonight will be mainly fine though at intervals there will be increased cloud. Temperatures will fall to 0 C inland, around 4 C on the east coast, around 3 C on the remaining coasts and -9 in the highest Troodos peaks.

Tomorrow will be cold with intervals of fine weather and intervals of cloud which may lead to light rain or even sleet in the lowlands and light snow in the mountains and semi-mountainous areas.

Temperatures will be 8 C inland, around 11 C on the coast and -3 in the mountains.

Tomorrow night will be cold with intervals of fine weather and intervals of cloud with the possibility of light showers or sleet in the lowlands and light snow fall in higher altitudes.

Monday will be mainly fine and cold while Tuesday will be cloudy at intervals with light showers mainly from midday on. Wednesday will be partly cloudy with light showers and light snowfall in the highest Troodos peaks.

Temperatures will edge up gradually until Tuesday but remain below the seasonal average, rising further on Wednesday to close to average for the time of year.

The highest temperatures recorded today were 13 C in Nicosia, 14 C at Larnaca Airport, 13 C in Limassol, 13 C at Paphos Airport, 12 C at Frenaros, -1 at Prodromos and 12 C in Polis Chrysochous.
