Mainly fine today, possible showers in the morning and chilly tonight

It will be mainly fine today with scattered showers in the morning, strong winds that will abate in the afternoon and a chilly night with temperatures of -3 in the higher Troodos peaks.

Problems have been reported on a number of mountain roads after overnight rains, including rock slides, and drivers are being urged to be particularly careful.

The Met Office said that the low pressure centered on northwest Syria is receding quickly, making way for weak high pressure.

Friday will be mainly fine, but in the morning there will be local, increased cloud that will lead to isolated showers as well as snowfall at intervals in the higher Troodos peaks.

Winds will be strong to very strong, but will drop late in the afternoon.

Temperatures will rise to 14 C inland, around 16 C on the coast and around 4 C in the mountains.

In the morning there will be frost in the mountains and locally in semi-mountainous areas while the frost will continue locally in the higher mountains later.

Tonight will be mainly fine. Temperatures will fall to 4 C inland, around 7 C on the coast and around -3 in the higher mountains. There will be frost in the mountains and semi-mountainous area.

Saturday and Sunday will be mainly fine but locally there will be increased cloud which in the west and north may lead locally to light showers or sleet at intervals in the higher Troodos peaks.

Monday will be partly cloudy with the possibility of scattered showers and at intervals sleet in the higher Troodos peaks.

Temperatures will edge up on Saturday, remaining at the same levels on Sunday and Monday at a little above the seasonal average.

The depth of snow on Troodos Square at the time of issue of the early morning weather bulletin was 72 C.

Roads

Police said that there are problems on the mountain roads because of the weather and drivers are urged to be particularly careful

There have been rock slides on the following roads:

Kakopetria – Pinewood – Pedoulas
Platres –Trooditissa
Pedoulas – Kykkos
Prodromos – Trooditissa

Because of ice, roads in the mountains are slippery.

The Platres, Prodromos and Karvounas roads are open only to four wheel drive cars or those equipped with snow chains.

All drivers in the mountains should be particularly careful, drive slowly and keep a safe distance from other drivers, police said adding that because road conditions in the mountains are changing, the public should stay updated via the police app or website www.cypruspolicenews.com.
