Mainly fine today, colder weather forecast for tomorrow

It will be another mostly sunny day with the possibility of showers and light snowfall in the higher Troodos peaks in the evening.

In its early morning weather bulletin, the Met Office said that weak, relatively low pressure is affecting the area today while a very strong northerly air stream is expected from late tonight until early on Friday afternoon.

Thursday there will be intervals of sunshine and intervals of cloud, but in the west and north it will be partly cloudy and at intervals cloudy. In the morning there will be ice in the mountains and semi-mountain areas, while early in the morning there there will be frost also inland in places.

In the afternoon there may be isolated light rain or light snowfall in the higher Troodos peaks. Temperatures will rise to 17 C inland and on the coast and around 7 C in the mountains.

Tonight will be mainly cloudy at intervals and local showers and/or thunderstorms are forecast as well as snow in the mountains and possibly in the semi-mountain areas. Winds will be strong while temperatures will fall to 5 C inland, around 7 C on the coasts and -4 in the mountains where there will be frost.

Friday will be mainly fine and cold, with very strong northerly winds in places which will gradually abate in the afternoon. At night there will be frost.

Saturday and Sunday will be mainly fine and on Sunday there will be increased cloud at intervals.

There will be a marked drop in temperatures on Friday to below average for the time of year but will move up to the seasonal average on Saturday. Temperatures will edge up further on Sunday.

The depth of snow at Troodos Square at the time of issue of the early morning weather bulletin was 79 cm.


Roads in the mountains are open for all vehicles but slippery because of ice and drivers are urged to be particularly careful and to drive slowly and keep a safe distance from other vehicles.

Police said that the road network in the mountains is constantly changing because of the wintry conditions and drivers are urged to stay updated through the police App or the website.
