Mainly cloudy with rain and snow in mountains, improvement after midday

It will be wet and windy to start off today but the weather will improve in  the afternoon as the low pressure system south of Cyprus weakens.

A yellow alert is in force until noon, with the Met Office warning that showers and thunderstorms will affect the southern coastline and inland. The accumulated precipitation may reach up to 50 mm in a six-hour period.

Police have warned that roads are slippery while roads to Troodos are currently open only to four wheel drive cars of those equipped with snow chains.

In its early morning weather bulletin, the Met Office said that Friday will be mainly cloudy with local rain and isolated thunderstorms, mainly inland, the south and east. There will be snow or sleet in the mountains.

After midday the weather is expected to gradually improve. Temperatures will be 13 C inland, 14 C on the coast and 2 C in the mountains where frost is expected.

Tonight will be partly cloudy with the possibility of isolated showers and snow or sleet in the higher Troodos peaks. Temperatures will fall to 9 C inland, around 10 C on the west and north coasts, around 12 C on the south and east coasts and 0 C in the higher mountains. Frost is expected locally in the mountains and hilly areas.

Saturday, Sunday and Monday will be partly cloudy while at intervals there will be isolated rain and snow or sleet in the higher mountain peaks.

Temperatures will edge up on Saturday to close to average for the time of year, remaining at the same levels on Sunday and Monday.

The depth of snow at Troodos Square at the time of issue of the weather bulletin was 77 cm.

Police are urging everyone to be particularly careful as roads are slippery because of the rain.

In the mountains, roads to Troodos are open only to four wheel drive cars of those equipped with snow chains.Drivers are urged to drive slowly, keep a safe distance from other vehicles and give priority to other vehicles where necessary,

Road conditions in the mountains are constantly changing and drivers should stay up to date with the police App or its website.
