Yellow heat warning in place, as scorcher continues

Relevant News

The heatwave persists today across most of the island, with temperatures slightly dropping but still over 40 and a yellow extreme temperature warning issued by the department of meteorology in force until five this afternoon. It will be 41 degrees Celsius over inland areas, 39 over the southern and eastern coastal regions and 33 on higher mountainous regions.

It is the 47th extreme weather conditions warning this year for Cyprus, with seven on the trot over the past week, as scientists predict a stifling summer with longer periods of heatwaves and more frequent higher temperatures, like yesterday’s 45 Celsius.

Adding to the sweltering conditions which claimed the life of a 91 year old woman yesterday, the first victim of sunstroke, a thin layer of hazardous dust at intervals. Winds will initially be light moderate force three to four, southwesterly to northwesterly, later turning moderate to strong, force four to five and gradually very strong force six, over slight to moderate seas.

Temperatures will reach 41 degrees Celsius inland, 39 over the south and east, 36 over the north, 34 in the west and 33 on the highest reaches of the Troodos mountains.

Clear skies this evening with light to moderate winds force three to four and temperatures dropping to 21 degrees Celsius inland, 23 over coastal regions and 18 on the mountains.

Temperatures will further drop tomorrow and over the early part of next week, but still over the seasonal average.

The Department of Meteorology is expecting isolated showers on Monday, mainly over the mountains.
