673kg waste per inhabitant in 2022 in Cyprus

In 2022, the total quantity of municipal solid waste generated in Cyprus amounted to 615 thousand tonnes compared to 585 thousand tonnes in 2021, indicating an increase of approximately 5%, according to estimates from the Statistical Service.

On average, this corresponds to 673 kilograms per inhabitant, the 5th highest production in the EU.

Out of the quantity of 469 thousand tonnes that underwent final disposal in 2022, 77.5% was disposed of in landfills (MSW, RDF), 17.2% was recycled, 3.1% was used for energy recovery, and 2.2% was composted.

The average production of municipal waste per inhabitant in the European Union in 2022 was 513 kilograms.

In Cyprus, the per capita production of municipal waste reached 673 kilograms, a performance that ranked as the 5th highest among EU member states in 2022.

Austria had the highest production of municipal waste per inhabitant (835 kilograms, 2021 data), followed by Denmark (787 kilograms), Luxembourg (721 kilograms), Belgium (677 kilograms), and Cyprus (673 kilograms).
