UN envoy willing to work towards resumption of Cyprus talks

Following her initial discussion with President Christodoulides in Nicosia, María Angela Holguín Cuellar, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Cyprus, announced her willingness to assist in restarting conversations on the Cyprus problem.

After the meeting, the Colombian representative shared her enthusiasm for the task ahead, drawing parallels to her involvement in her own country’s successful resolution of a half-century-long conflict through a peace deal, stating, “I think I can collaborate and do my best to achieve good results for Cyprus.”

Holguín expressed her satisfaction with the longstanding efforts toward resolving the Cyprus conflict and committed to injecting fresh impetus into the effort. She also mentioned to the press that focusing less on public discourse enables her to be more productive in her work.

The dialogue at the Presidential Mansion went on for an hour and was followed by a more private exchange between Holguín and President Christodoulides for around 20 minutes.

Sources reveal that Holguín’s strategy includes establishing a consistent presence in Cyprus and making frequent visits to engage in numerous discussions. Her agenda includes a forthcoming meeting with the leader of the Turkish Cypriots, Ersin Tatar, and a session with the Greek Cypriot representative, Menelaos Menelaou, set for Thursday.

Holguín also intends to connect with civil society representatives across Cyprus to deepen her comprehension of the local issues.

Before departing from Cyprus, Holguín is slated for another meeting with the President, and there’s a potential for a joint session with both island leaders to round off her inaugural trip.

Additionally, she has planned engagements in Athens, Ankara, and Brussels before her return to Cyprus.
