UN Envoy to revisit Cyprus in March

Relevant News

Maria Angela Holguín Cuéllar is expected in Cyprus around March 10th for her second round of contacts.

It is anticipated that she will continue to listen to and record positions. But what Nicosia is focused on is how the personal envoy of the Secretary-General will move to resolve the deadlock.

Holguín, according to our information, will be in London between March 5th and 7th for meetings at the British Foreign Ministry.

Immediately afterward, she will travel to Cyprus where she plans to have a new round of contacts with organized groups from both sides. She is expected to meet with the business communities of the two communities.

So far, she is limited – as she herself stated – to listening to and recording the positions of each side. However, it is not expected that this will last for a long time, and after recording the positions, her first moves will be expected.

And there, diplomatic circles estimate, her intentions regarding the continuation will be revealed.

Foreign Minister Konstantinos Kompos, speaking at an event organized by the Japanese ambassador on the occasion of Emperor Naruhito’s birthday, also referred to the Cyprus issue.

Addressing foreign diplomats and representatives of the United Nations, he stressed that “once again, it is necessary to state that there is no alternative solution, there can be no other basis.” Indicating that “we will continue to work for the resumption of substantive negotiations and we will continue to closely cooperate with the personal envoy of the UN Secretary-General in this direction.”

Kompos also expressed “Cyprus’s deep appreciation for Japan’s principled stance on the Cyprus issue” and “as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, Japan once again demonstrates its unwavering support for international legality.”

Holguín’s statement that during her next trip to Cyprus she will seek meetings with political parties and representatives of civil society has led various organizations to address the United Nations to request to meet with the Secretary-General’s envoy.

In a letter to the personal envoy of the UN Secretary-General, Maria Angela Holguín Cuéllar, the “Pan-Cypriot Mobilization Initiative for the Freedom of Cyprus” requested a meeting with her in early March, as announced by the Initiative.

It is noted that the letter was delivered to a representative of the Political Affairs Office of UNFICYP by a delegation of the Initiative, following a written request for a meeting with Ms. Holguín within the framework of her contacts with members of civil society.

The letter, delivered to the United Nations, conveys the strong support of the Initiative for the end of Turkish occupation and its vision of a “united, democratic, pluralistic, and secular state,” the announcement said.
