Maria Angela Holguín Cuéllar, the Personal Representative of the UN Secretary-General, expressed the hope that the leaders of the two communities in Cyprus would be able to “listen to citizens.”

She conveyed this hope following her meeting on Wednesday afternoon in the occupied territories with the Turkish Cypriot leader, Ersin Tatar.

During the meeting, she informed him about the international support for a lasting solution to the Cyprus issue and the desire of civil society in this direction.

In statements after her meeting with Tatar, Holguín stated that they had “a very constructive discussion.”

Tatar “reiterated his position. I told him about my trips to certain countries and that the international community supports a lasting solution in Cyprus, which I consider important and now the responsibility lies with the leaders,” she emphasized.

She noted that in recent months she has heard “from civil society, the private sector, young people.”

“I have met many people and everyone, across the whole island, wants to move forward,” she added.

So, she said, “it is the responsibility of the leaders to do something, and I hope they will be able to listen to the citizens.”
