Relevant News

Christakis Panayiotou, the head of the community, reported that work by the occupying forces near the buffer zone in the Deneia region is continuing, with the United Nations closely monitoring the situation.

Responding to a question from CNA regarding the situation in the area following yesterday’s allegations of Turkish military activities near the buffer zone in the Deneia region, Mr. Panayiotou stated that they observe ongoing work, specifically the excavation of a large canal, approximately three meters deep.

He noted that, as they observed, the work began three days ago.

He mentioned that President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, called him and requested information on the matter.

Panayiotou further stated that the United Nations seems to be closely monitoring the area, and earlier today, a helicopter of the peacekeeping force passed through the location.

The community leader of Deneia also mentioned that he is in contact with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, expressing satisfaction with the interest shown by both the government and President Christodoulides personally, as well as by the United Nations.

According to Mr. Panayiotou, the residents of the community are now accustomed to such movements and are not afraid, but they appreciate the interest shown by the government.

The spokesperson for the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP), Aleem Siddique, when asked by the CNA, stated that there has been no change since yesterday, and they are closely monitoring the area to prevent any escalation.
