The European Commission has a strategic interest in a stable and secure environment in the Eastern Mediterranean and has called on Turkey to fully respect international law, de-escalate tensions for the benefit of regional stability in the Eastern Mediterranean, and promote good neighborly relations in a sustainable manner.

This statement was made by the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, in response to a written question from Member of the European Parliament Demetris Papadakis.

Mr. Papadakis had requested the Commission to take measures to protect the sovereign rights of the Republic of Cyprus following provocative actions by occupying forces in the so-called “dead zone” in Agios Demetrios.

Mr. Borrell stated, “The EU remains fully committed to the resolution of the Cyprus issue based on a bizonal, bicommunal federation with political equality, in line with the decisions of the United Nations Security Council and the principles on which the EU is founded and its acquis.”

He also noted that in June 2023, the European Council reaffirmed its commitment in this direction.

In his response, the High Representative concluded that “the EU continues to defend its interests and the interests of its member states, calling on Turkey to cease all threats and actions that harm good neighborly relations, normalize its relations with the Republic of Cyprus, and respect the sovereign rights of all member states.”
