During the final quarter of 2022, traffic light cameras in Cyprus detected an average of 200 infractions daily, a significant decrease from the 800 recorded in the early part of the same year, as revealed in a meeting of the Road Safety Council held on Thursday.
The session was presided over by the Minister for Transport, Communications and Works, Alexis Vafeades, with contributions from the Minister for Justice and Public Order, Marios Hartsiotis, alongside representatives from the Police and other pertinent organisations, according to a statement from the Transport Ministry.
Vafeades emphasised the critical role of the traffic camera system, whose sole purpose is to enhance road safety, particularly in reducing the number of fatal traffic incidents.
The Council received updates indicating that in areas with operational traffic cameras, the daily average of recorded offences dropped to 200 in the last quarter of 2022, down from 800 in the initial months of the year.
“These data are encouraging,” Vafeades said referring to the effectiveness of the measure.
