There are new opportunities for the Cyprus issue, Greek Minister of Foreign Affairs, George Gerapetritis, told his American counterpart, Antony Blinken on Friday.

Gerapetritis was referring to the assumption of duties by the UNSG’s Personal Envoy on Cyprus, María Ángela Holguín Cuéllar.

The two top diplomats met within the framework of the US-Greece Strategic Dialogue, held on Friday in Washington DC.

Addressing reporters after the meeting’s conclusion, Gerapetritis stated, “I also raised with Mr. Blinken the Cyprus issue, particularly in light of the assumption of duties by the Personal Envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General.”

He added, “This presents an opportunity to draw attention to the Cyprus issue, aiming to finally achieve a viable solution within the framework of the United Nations Security Council resolutions.”

Meanwhile, a joint statement on the U.S.-Greece Strategic Dialogue affirmed the commitment of both nations to promoting regional integration, the rule of law, good neighbourly relations, stability, and security in the Western Balkans and Eastern Mediterranean region.

Additionally, it expressed support for cooperation through the 3+1 format (involving Greece, Cyprus, Israel, plus the United States).
