Surviving 6 assassination attempts: The life of ‘Alexoui’

Relevant News

Alexis ‘Alexoui’ Mavromichalis, was a person known to authorities and the public for his involvement in organised crime.

Despite frequent clashes with the police, Mavromichalis was arrested only once, in connection with an attempt against the life of Panayiotis Panayiotou, also known as ‘Glykas’.

The first murder attempt against ‘Alexoui’ took place in 2004 when he was 26. Hitmen from Greece failed to execute him from close range while he was outside a store. Despite returning to finish the job the next day, they remained unsuccessful. The culprits were captured, and among their possessions was a photo of Mavromichalis.

In a peculiar turn of events in 2006, it surfaced that a victim of a traffic accident had intentions to assassinate Mavromichalis.

In 2008, amid a period marked by homicides in Nicosia, an unknown assailant opened fire on Mavromichalis as he departed the Digenis Morphou clubhouse on Kyriakou Matsi Avenue. Despite sustaining injuries, ‘Alexoui’ survived.

He further survived an assassination attempt in 2015 when he was targeted with an anti-tank weapon as he exited from his vehicle outside his home in Strovolos. The attack claimed the life of a 27-year-old security guard.

Subsequent to these incidents, two more murder plots emerged, one even originating from within the Central Prisons. In March 2016, leaked messages uncovered the arrival of hitmen from Serbia, contracted to eliminate ‘Alexoui’.

On March 31, 2016, an effort was made to assassinate him and two companions outside a café in Nicosia. Reports detail how the hitmen pursued Mavromichalis, with one brandishing a firearm. Once the Serbians learned of the exposure of their plans, they promptly fled without inflicting harm.

In a later instance, plans for his execution by Albanian hitmen were leaked, but Mavromichalis had already left the country.

However, the seventh attempt against his life, on October 31, proved to be fatal, as hitmen struck Alexoui with a sniper while he was standing on his second-floor apartment’s balcony in Nicosia.

He passed away a few hours later while undergoing surgery for wounds to his abdomen at the Nicosia General Hospital.
